Brand Film? Commercial? Same Camera. Different Job.

These terms get mixed together constantly. Understandably. Both can look cinematic. Both can involve a lot of the same production tools. But they're usually doing different jobs.

A brand film explains.

A brand film is often about:

  • Who you are
  • Why you exist
  • What you believe
  • How the company started
  • The people behind it
  • Why somebody should trust you

It may live on your website for years. It's usually more story driven. Often slower.

More human.

A commercial persuades.

A commercial usually has a more immediate job. Buy this. Try this. Book this. Remember this product. Go here.

A commercial might be:

  • 15 seconds
  • 30 seconds
  • 60 seconds

It often needs to communicate faster.

They can overlap.

Of course. A commercial can have emotion. A brand film can sell something. Marketing categories are not laws of physics. But asking what the video needs to accomplish helps us decide how to build it.

Which one do you need?

If people don't understand:

  • Who you are
  • Why you're different
  • Why they should trust you

a brand film may make sense. If you're launching:

  • A product
  • Campaign
  • Offer
  • Service
  • Promotion

a commercial or campaign piece may be a better fit. Sometimes you need both.

Same cameras. Different job.
